The myth of the silver bullet

By Jim Logan • May 3rd, 2007 • Category: Vision & Direction

I have bad news for some of you - there's no silver bullet to business success. It would be great if there were, but it doesn't exist.

I wish I had a dollar for every business owner, leader, and investor I've met who's searching for the one thing to increase sales and make more money.

The quest for the silver bullet presentation, letter, web copy, process, tagline, logo, white paper, etc. is great. Led by false expectations, it's a colossal waste of time, energy, and effort - setting you up for further disappointment.

A prospective customer closed a conversation with me a couple months ago by saying "That all makes a lot of sense. I just hoped there were one magical thing I could do to close more business." It doesn't exist.

Stop looking for the one thing. It's a fool's game and distracts you from real success.  Chasing the one thing makes you schizophrenic - jumping from one unrelated tactic to another. The time you lose jumping around is lost forever.

While there is no magical one thing to increase sales, there are a number of systems that can boost revenue. The trick, if there is one, is to have a plan for attracting new business - a marketing plan.

A marketing plan is a well thought process of strategies and tactics to attract prospects and convert them to lifetime customers. It's a roadmap of sorts to piece together new business. Leveraging PR, marketing, and sales, a marketing plan serves to make sense of one activity followed by another, eliminating schizophrenic marketing behavior and giving you a chance to learn more about your market, offer, and target customer.

Every customer acquisition campaign should have a plan.

Your plan doesn't have to be complicated or well written. The only requirement is your plan needs to be well thought. You have to think through each step you take, before you take it, knowing what to expect as a result and what to do next.

Plan for your success.
